Purpose · The story behind the work

This is why
I do what I do.

“I’m really sorry, Nick. There’s no easy way to say this…”

I’ve heard those words twice.

The first time was in 2012 when I lost Ben, my best friend that I grew up with. I was standing in my kitchen in 2024, when I heard them again losing another best friend, Dee.

Losing Ben changed the direction of my life. I wrestled with it for a long time, but eventually that became resolve. I wanted to do something useful, to help make people’s lives more liveable.

That journey led me into mental fitness and founding Fika a tech platform , where we helped sixty thousand people develop practical skills for work and life.

But over time I learned something that changed my thinking.

We don’t thrive alone.

You can give someone all the individual skills in the world, but the quality of the relationships around them has an enormous effect on how they cope, perform and experience life.

I’d seen the same thing throughout my working life. When people trust each other, speak openly, support each other and have each other’s backs, tough work can still be fulfilling. When those connections break down, the same work can feel unbearable.

And today we connect constantly, through meetings, messages, platforms and now AI. But more connection doesn’t necessarily leave us feeling more connected.

That’s why my work has become about reconnection.

Creating purposeful moments that strengthen the relationships between people. Turning those moments into rituals. And turning those rituals into better ways of working.

Because better work isn’t only about what we achieve.

It should help us live better too.

My purpose is simple: reconnecting people for a better life.
